Baron Umfraville was a hereditary British title ( Barony by writ ) in the Peerage of England .

Award and history of the title

The title was created on June 24, 1295 for the Anglo-Norman nobleman Gilbert de Umfraville when he was appointed to the English Parliament by King Edward I of England by Writ of Summons . Already in 1267 he had inherited the Scottish nobility title of Earl of Angus from his Scottish-Gaelic mother Matilda, Countess of Angus , which resulted in a tense relationship for the titleholders as to whether they were loyal to the English or Scottish king. After the overthrow of the Scottish King John Balliol , the 1st Baron and his son, Robert de Umfraville, placed 2nd Baron Umfraville on the side of the English Kings Edward I and Edward II , who soon openly claimed sovereignty over Scotland. After Robert de Umfraville fought the Scots in the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 , King Robert I of Scotland declared his Scottish earl title forfeited and confiscated his Scottish lands. In England, he and his son Gilbert de Umfraville, 3rd Baron Umfraville, continued to use the title of Earl of Angus , but were ultimately unable to enforce the title due to the defeat of both the English and the Scottish apprentice to the throne, Edward Balliol, in the Scottish Wars of Independence .

The barony of Umfraville finally became extinct with the childless death of the 3rd baron on January 6, 1381.
