Barrakunda Falls

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barrakunda Falls , also Barrakunda Falls or Barra Kunda Falls , are located in the Tambacounda region in the West African state of Senegal . The Gambia leaves the mountainous country here at Barrakunda , coming from Fouta Djallon in Guinea , and enters the broad and flat coastal zone with the Barrakunda Falls rapids . After about eight kilometers downstream, the Gambia reaches the territory of the Gambia .

The Portuguese explorer Diogo Gomes was the first European to sail the Gambia as far as these rapids in 1457.
