South African fur seal colony |
Tenth Island (also called Barrenjoey ) is a small island and nature reserve with an area of 900 m 2 . It is part of the Waterhouse Island Group on Tasmania's northeast coast . The island has no vegetation and it is largely washed over by the winter storms.
fauna
The island has a large colony of South African fur seals , with up to 400 animals being born each year. Black-history shags also breed on the island and little penguins live there.
Shark attack
While scuba diving at the fur seal colony, Therese Cartwright was killed by a five meter long white shark on June 5, 1993 .
