The presented in 2006 Barrett XM500 is a self-loading - Anti-materiel rifle company Barrett Firearms Manufacturing in caliber 12.7 x 99 mm NATO . The weapon is designed as a gas pressure loader with a fixed barrel.

The XM500 is supposed to be a weight-reduced and compact alternative to the M82 . That is why this gas pressure loader is designed as a bullpup rifle , which leads to a weight of 1.1 kg less than the M82 and a length of 279 mm less. The fixed barrel should also increase the precision of the weapon.

Like its predecessor, the XM500 is equipped with a detachable and adjustable bipod that is mounted under the barrel. A Picatinny rail is used to hold aiming aids.

The development of the weapon was advanced primarily for a possible takeover by the US armed forces. However, until the beginning of 2010 there was no information about series production.
