The canyon at Barron Falls

The Barron River Gorge is a canyon in the rainforest on the lower reaches of the Barron River in Queensland ( Australia ).

The almost ten kilometer long gorge is located at the northeast end of the Atherton Tablelands , about 15 kilometers north of Cairns . It begins below the 260 meter high Barron Falls near the village of Kuranda and ends at Lake Placid , where the Barron River flows into the Cairns Plain.

Due to its scenic beauty, it has become one of the most famous tourist attractions in North Queensland and has been a protected nature reserve as the Barron Gorge National Park for several years . The gorge is a popular destination for canoeists and rafters. The impressive rainforest on the river banks was made accessible through several nature trails.

Along the southern edge of the gorge, the Kuranda Scenic Railway , a historic, winding railway line, leads from Freshwater Station over a number of filigree bridges and through many tunnels, past several waterfalls, to Kuranda. The worldwide unique Skyrail runs along the northern edge of the gorge , an approx. 8 km long cable car directly over the tops of the rainforest.
