history

In the 11th to 12th centuries, the castle was built by the bishops of Basel and first mentioned in 1185 and then again around 1233 as castrum Istein . From 1410 to 1411 the castle was razed by Basel troops . The interim owners of the pledged castle were Jakob von Waldkron, Werner Schaler , the city of Basel , Austria , Burkhart Münch von Landskron der ae. and the younger, the Counts of Freiburg and the Margraves of Sausenberg .

From 1900 to 1914 the castle complex was expanded as a fortress , incorporated into the Siegfried Line from 1936 and blown up after the end of the Second World War in 1945.

St. Vitus Chapel

The St. Vitus Chapel , built around 1100 to 1200, is said to have been one of two original castle chapels , the remains of which are visible from afar in a niche in the steep rock face. The small chapel, which was rebuilt after the castle was destroyed in 1650 and which was in ruins after it was blown up in 1947, was largely rebuilt in the 1980s.
