history

The castle, which was probably built around 1250, is probably Neuenstein Castle, which was named in 1283 in the possession of the Lords of Stein . On November 19, 1400, Margrave Rudolf III bought. von Hachberg-Sausenberg took over the Neuenstein lordship with the Nüw Stein fortress from the heirs of Rudolf von Schönau , who died in the battle of Sempach , Anna von Klingenberg , the widow and her son Albrecht.

The castle was called Steineck later, for example in the 16th century, when Margrave Christoph von Baden gave Apollinaris Höcklin a fief with the saddle yard and the nearby castle. The latter was referred to as the "Burgstadel" and was therefore already a ruin. The Höcklin family was raised to the nobility and subsequently appears as "Höcklin von Steineck". The current name "Burgholz" has been used for the castle ruins since the 17th century.

Castle complex

From the former of a main castle , a southern and a northern bailey existing castle of the castle hill, remains of walls and an oval are still moat with outdoor Wall received. The core castle probably comprised a round tower and an elongated building. In the north, the outworks were partially destroyed during the construction of the road and a timber removal route. The neck ditch in the north of the facility (near the connecting road between Raitbach and Schweigmatt, K 6339) is 5 meters wide and 6 meters deep.

Although the facility is located directly on the district road (after Raitbach-Kehrengraben in the curve before the junction to Hof Blumberg), it is hardly accessible. There is no path on the steep castle hill.
