Turmhölzle ruin

The ruin Turmhölzle is the ruin of a spur castle at 620  m above sea level. NN high spur-like foothills of the Hohen Möhr east of the district Raitbach of the city of Schopfheim in the district of Lörrach in Baden-Württemberg . The remains of the keep and other wall remains of the former small castle complex from the High Middle Ages have been preserved.

history

No historical data are known about the castle to this day. Like the masonry of the keep, it could have been built during the 12th century. The current name Turmhölzle came up later and does not represent the historical name. In property registers from the 15th century, which should record the property of the St. Blasien monastery in Raitbach, the name "Fernegg" can be found for the castle area and thus probably also for the castle. Another reference to the castle could be a property register from 1360, which speaks of a farm "under the harrow". The castle was probably given to Ministeriale by the monastery as a fief and served to secure the monastic rule .

In the summer of 1981 the castle ruins were extensively excavated by groups of schoolchildren under the direction of archaeologists Thomas Keilhack and Gerhard Wesselkamp from Eimeldingen .

description

The castle site is located on a spur hill facing west-south-west, which slopes steeply on three sides into the surrounding stream valleys. The elongated-oval castle area is surrounded by a ring moat with a partially flattened outer wall, two more moats were dug on the rising mountain side in the east .

Rest of the keep

The core facility consisted of a curtain wall , a keep and a building attached to the keep and the Bering. The square keep has a wall thickness of about 2.5 meters. Its masonry consisted of smooth blocks without bosses . To the west of this main tower is a larger building wing , as construction joints show, this building was built in several construction phases. The location of the castle gate is not yet known.
