Stettener Schlösschen

The Stettener Schlösschen (Alemannic: Stettemer Schlössli ) is a small late Gothic castle in the Lörrach district of Stetten . The building, built between 1630 and 1666 and expanded in 1738, served the Säckinger Damenstift as the administrative seat and is the only larger secular building from the 17th century.

history

The originally Gothic castle was almost completely destroyed as a result of the Thirty Years War . It was built by the Säckinger Damenstift as a Dinghof in the center of the village, which was formed in a star shape around the complex and church. Due to the chaos of war, only the basement and the lower part of the then round tower remained of the former Dinghof. The castle was rebuilt in the 17th century in the Renaissance style. The transition between the two architectural styles can be recognized by corresponding wall sections.

The earliest owners of the Stettener Schlösschen in its current form were the servants of the Säckinger Damenstift - the gentlemen von Stein and their descendants, the gentlemen von Schönau . After 1727 no new masters moved in, as the Meieramt was administered by the monastery itself until the Säckingen property was dissolved in 1806. The building remained unused for many decades and became increasingly neglected that in 1930 even the top of the tower fell. In 1934 the proposal was made to acquire the house on a cooperative basis to build a retirement home. The monument conservationist Julius Wilhelm even considered moving his own domicile to the Stettener Schlösschen. There were also plans to turn the castle into a youth hostel . However, the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments decided to keep the historic building in public hands and carried out renovation work in 1939, 1953 and 1963. Further renovations in the first half of the 1980s cost almost one million marks and were finally completed in 1990. On November 12, 1985 the building was opened to the public by the then Lord Mayor of Lörrachs Egon Hugenschmidt and has served as a gallery ever since.

description

The high mansion with a gable roof is characterized by asymmetrical window arrangements and an external stair tower with a hexagonal floor plan and a pyramid roof as a closure to the east side. The entrance doors and the round arch are laid out with boss blocks . The house with foundation walls just under 70 centimeters thick is 11 meters long and 6.7 meters wide. The edge length of the hexagonal stair tower is around 1.8 meters.

The manor is on the list of cultural monuments .
