Gerhard Moehring

Gerhard Moehring (born March 28, 1921 in Lörrach ) is a German educator, local researcher and author of transnational literature on the Upper Rhine . He was a late returnee from the last war, became a teacher and was also director of the museum at Burghof Lörrach and deputy chairman of the Baden-Württemberg Museum Association .

Life

Moehring was born as the son of the high school professor for classical philology Gustav Moehring. He completed his school education at the Lever-Gymnasium Lörrach with the Abitur in 1939. The subsequent study of forest sciences at the University of Freiburg , he had to break off after the pre-examination because of the conscription for military service .

During the war against the Soviet Union he was a member of the 14th Anti-Tank Company of Infantry Regiment 436 ( 132nd Infantry Division ), where he was promoted to company commander , was captured by the Soviets on May 9, 1945 and returned home on October 18, 1955 . Moehring was one of the 10,000 prisoners that Josef Stalin held as bargaining chips in the conflict during the Cold War . It was not until Konrad Adenauer's intervention in October 1955 that the ten thousand returned home . The homecoming story of Moehring and his utensils from that time are on display in the House of History in Stuttgart.

In 1956 Moehring studied at the University of Education in Freiburg and became a teacher at various schools in Lörrach. As a sports teacher at the Fridolin School in Lörrach-Stetten, he was also the coach of Ottmar Hitzfeld , and later he became the deputy headmaster in Lörrach-Obertüllingen.

As a sideline, he was director of the Museum am Burghof for 30 years (since 2012: Dreiländermuseum ) as well as in the preservation of monuments in Lörrach and in the national monument protection authority. Moehring was also deputy head of the Baden-Württemberg Museum Association. Since 1961 he has been writing articles on the history of Lörrach a . a. also in the regional press such as the Badische Zeitung and the newspapers of the Jaumann publishing house .

In January 2020, Gerhard Moehring received the Lisa Rees Medal from the city of Lörrach for his outstanding work in society. Numerous other honors include honorary membership of the Rotary Club in Lörrach and the Paul Harris Medal from Rotary International . His son Markus Moehring has been director of the Dreiländermuseum in Lörrach since 1991.
