Egon Hugenschmidt (born June 24, 1925 in Lörrach-Stetten ; † April 11, 2010 ibid) was a German lawyer and non-party politician and the mayor of Lörrach from 1960 to 1984 .

Life

Early years and career

Born in Stetten and raised Hugenschmidt made 1943 a Notabitur on Lörracher Hebel-Gymnasium , made from 1943 to 1945 its military and labor service and came at the end of World War II in captivity. After the war, he made up his Abitur in 1945 and then began studying law at the University of Basel . In 1950 he passed his first state examination , followed by the second state examination in 1953. Hugenschmidt started as a lawyer in Lörrach and switched to civil service at the District Office of the Emmendingen district . In 1956 he was appointed to the administrative court of Freiburg im Breisgau and in 1959 was elected second mayor of Lörrach.

A year later, on November 13, 1960, Hugenschmidt became Lord Mayor of the city after the death of Arend Braye and at the age of 35 the youngest in the state of Baden-Württemberg in this office. With 57.7% in the first ballot, he received the most votes.

During his tenure, several schools were built or existing ones enlarged, such as the Hans-Thoma-Gymnasium . During his term of office, the construction of the museum at the Burghof fell in the 1960s, the development of the new building area Salzert and the incorporation of Brombach , Hauingen and Haagen as well as the new construction of the town hall tower and the move of the city administration there. Hugenschmidt founded the community partnership with the French town of Sens and campaigned for Franco-German reconciliation. On September 10, 1966, the partnership agreement was signed with Gaston Perrot, then mayor of the city of Sens. The construction of the Grüttpark Stadium from 1964 to 1966 also fell during his term of office . A major project that Hugenschmidt accompanied and in whose favor he postponed the new construction of the city hall was the 1983 State Garden Show , which took place in Grüttpark . In the course of the garden show, not only the local recreation area was created, but also the securing of drinking water supply for the entire city.

In addition to his work as Lord Mayor, Hugenschmidt was chairman of the administrative board of the district savings bank and chairman of the supervisory board of Baden gas and electricity supply in Lörrach . In 1983 he was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Lörrach , and in the same year he was honored by the Lörrach Lever Association with the “lever thanks”. Hugenschmidt laid the foundation stone for the traffic calming of the Lörrach city center by converting essential parts into a pedestrian zone. The first parts were the construction of the station square and the establishment of the pedestrian zone Turmstrasse. His successor Rainer Offergeld continued this development in the 1980s and 1990s.

Egon Hugenschmidt died on April 11, 2010 at the age of 84. After a public funeral service in the Fridolinskirche , he was buried in the cemetery in Stetten. Hugenschmidt was married and had five children.
