Werner Schaler
Werner Schaler († March 18, 1409 ) was Bishop of Basel from 1382 to 1392 under the Avignon obedience .
Life
Werner was the son of the knight Rudolf Schaler, an episcopal ministerial and mayor . He is documented as a canon in 1351 and as archdeacon in Basel in 1368 . Werner was elected Bishop of Basel by a minority in the cathedral chapter in 1382 and was confirmed on November 21 by the Avignon Pope Clement VII . The majority of the cathedral chapter elected the provost of Saint-Ursanne , Imer von Ramstein , in November 1383 by the Roman Pope Urban VI. has been confirmed. With Wolfhard von Ehrenfels , who was born in 1378 by Urban VI. was appointed coadjutor and bishop of Basel in 1381, there were three competitors for the bishopric. Wolfhard, who could not assert himself in the diocese and forfeited the support of the king, resigned against compensation in 1385. In 1381 Imer appointed the Strasbourg bishop Friedrich von Blankenheim as coadjutor and then resigned. Thanks to the support of Leopold III. claim first in the Habsburg territories. After Leopold's successor Albrecht III. Werner renounced the diocese in 1392. He received the pledge over the rule of Istein for life as compensation.
