Epiphanios Perialas

Metropolitan Epiphanios (* as Constantine Perialas on January 23, 1935 in Ithaca , New York ; † May 9, 2011 ibid) was an Orthodox Archbishop and Metropolitan of Spain and Portugal.

Life

He studied theology and philosophy at the Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts and at Syracuse University . He later graduated in Education Management from Harvard Business School and attended Cornell University and Fordham University .

From 1959 to 1984 he held various positions in the church. Since 1961 he has taught Speech Communication at Ithaca College . After his ordination in 1984, he became pastor of St. Catherine in Ithaca. In 1985 he was made an archimandrite . In 1999 he became pastor of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Ward in St. Clair Shores, Michigan.

On April 12, 2003, he was elected by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople as the first Metropolitan of Spain and Portugal and ordained bishop by Demetrios , Primus of the Orthodox Archdiocese of America and Exarch of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

In 2007 he announced his resignation for health reasons and was appointed titular bishop of Bryoula .
