Johann of Vienne

Johann von Vienne († October 7, 1382 in Pruntrut ) was Archbishop of Besançon from 1355 to 1361 , Bishop of Metz from 1361 to 1365 and Bishop of Basel from 1365 until his death .

Life

Johann came from a Burgundian noble family. He was the son of Gualterus, Lord of Mirebel. The Archbishop of Besançon, Hugo VI., Was his uncle, the French admiral Jean de Vienne was his nephew.

In 1337 he was canon in Chalon and in 1339 Thesaurar of St. Jean in Besançon . In 1356 he was appointed Governor of the Duchy of Burgundy by Philip I of Burgundy . Since June 8, 1356 Archbishop of Besançon, he was on November 13, 1361, due to disputes with the city, by Pope Innocent VI. transferred to Metz. There were also conflicts with the citizens in Metz and Johann had to move his seat to Vic-sur-Seille . On August 13th he was transferred to Basel. In Basel, too, Johann was in a dispute with the cathedral chapter and the citizens, the disputes increased the debts of the diocese and in 1373 Johann had to pledge the coinage and customs law to the city of Basel. During the war with Bern that began in 1367 , the city of Biel , which belongs to the diocese of Basel, fell victim to the flames, whereupon the citizens of Biel destroyed the episcopal castle in the city. In the Occidental Schism , Johann sided with Avignon with the support of the cathedral chapter , whereupon the Roman Pope Urban VI. excommunicated. After his death he was buried in the parish church of St. Pierre in Pruntrut .
