Barry Ralph Holstein (born November 19, 1941 in Youngstown , Ohio ) is an American theoretical nuclear physicist and particle physicist.

Life

Holstein graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1965 and a master's degree in 1967, and received a PhD in physics from Carnegie Mellon University in 1969 . As a post-doctoral student he was an instructor at Princeton University and from 1971 assistant professor and later professor at the University of Massachusetts .

He deals with weak interaction in particle and nuclear physics and chiral effective field theories and chiral perturbation theory in nuclear physics, for example with interactions that violate parity. He is particularly interested in fundamental symmetries and effective field theories, i.e. such models for elementary particles and their interactions that are valid for limited energy ranges in order to describe the physical system there more easily. He also deals with cosmology and quantum gravity (effective field theories for loop quantum gravity).

He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society , which awarded him its Herman Feshbach Prize in Theoretical Nuclear Physics for 2019 . In 1998 he received a Humboldt Research Award . In 1975/76 he was visiting scholar and 1985 visiting professor at Princeton University.

He has been married to Carolyn Morrow since 1966 and has two children.
