Barscobe Castle is a residential building near the Scottish hamlet of Balmaclellan in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

description

The building was built in 1648 as a laird's home . A one-story extension on the west side was added in the 18th or 19th centuries. After it became vacant in the 1960s, Barscobe Castle was extensively restored in 1971.

Barscobe Castle is isolated around 1.5 km northeast of Balmaclellan. The masonry of the two-story, L-shaped building is made of quarry stone . Above the profiled, framed entrance door in the building's inner corner, a coat of arms plate is embedded, which also shows the year of construction. Furthermore, the initials of the builders William McLellan and Mary (or Margaret) Gordon are given. Another door is on the right at the back of the building. However, there was originally a window at this point. The slate roof is designed with dormer windows. While its gable surface is unadorned on the north side, the initials “WMG” ( William MacLellan Gordon ) with the year 1648 and “HW” ( Hugh Wontner ) with the year 1971 are engraved on the west side . The annex, which was originally used as a barn, has now been converted into a garage. It is designed with flat segment arches and Harl- plastered facades.
