Balmaclellan ( Gaelic : Baile MhicIllFhaolain ) is a village in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . It is located around 33 kilometers west of Dumfries and 50 km southeast of Ayr .

history

In 1648 the Laird William McLellan built Barscobe Castle northeast of Balmaclellan . In the cemetery of the local church is the grave of Robert Grierson , who sacrificed himself in 1683 for the cause of the Covenanters . There are also the graves of the Robert Paterson family , who provided the template for Walter Scott's novel Old Mortality . The Ironmacannie Mill watermill was set up around four kilometers south of Balmaclellan in the late 18th century .

The population of Balmaclellan increased in the course of the 19th century from 554 in 1801 to 1145 in 1851. After that, the population declined. In 1951, 550 people were counted in Balmaclellan.

The A712 ( Crocketford - Newton Stewart ) touches Balmaclellan and connects the village to the trunk road network. 1.5 km to the west the road crosses the Water of Ken on the Ken Bridge near New Galloway . The A713 runs 1.5 km west, the A702 2.5 km north.
