Ironmacannie Mill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ironmacannie Mill is a former watermill near the Scottish village of Balmaclellan in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

description

The mill is isolated in a sparsely populated region around four kilometers south of Balmaclellan on the Shirmer's Burn stream , which flows into Loch Ken to the west . The simple, three-story building with an L-shaped floor plan originally dates from the late 18th century. However, the parts of the building that are preserved today were essentially built in the 19th century. The up to 60 cm thick masonry is made of quarry stone . A two-story kiln is attached to the west side .

To the northeast of the mill, a mill stream was diverted from the Shirmer's Burn and dammed up above. A lock regulated the current on the overshot waterwheel . This is an eight-spoke iron wheel with a diameter of 3.91 m and a width of 1.2 m. The shovels are made of wood. The internal machinery with drive trains for three pairs of grinding stones has been largely preserved.

A smaller, iron water wheel with a diameter of 1.2 m and a width of 39 cm is installed on the kiln. It was fed by a pipeline that was branched off from the Mühlbach. It was used to operate a fan to fan the kiln. Like the mill, the facilities of the kiln have largely been preserved to this day. In addition to the segment-arched kiln with its double-leaf steel door, this includes a hopper for filling sacks and a wooden chute for filling a hopper above the grinding stones in the adjacent mill.
