Results

The 189 member states of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) once again discussed climate protection. The main topic of the climate conference was, in addition to further reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, measures to adapt to climate change . India , Saudi Arabia and the United States had tried to prevent agreements for future mitigation commitments. After long discussions, the Argentine conference president Estrada was able to agree on a compromise with the European Union , Brazil , India and the United States. The climate summit ended one day late, but with concrete results. Among other things, the government representatives had agreed on a work program designed to make it easier for developing countries in particular to adapt to climate change and its consequences. The delegations also adopted stricter rules for the allocation of World Bank funds to developing countries. It was also emphasized that one wanted to expand weather observation and promote technology transfer . At the same time, a commitment was made at the summit to improve preventive disaster control in the future. The Dutch EU negotiator, Pieter van Geel , commented on the results of the conference: “We fought hard for this agreement. It's not as much as we hoped, but it's a step forward and that's important. ”UNFCCC Secretary-General Joke Waller-Hunter was relieved that concrete agreements were reached during the meeting. Representatives of environmental associations such as Greenpeace or Germanwatch expressed their disappointment with the conference results.

During the climate summit, Indonesia , Liechtenstein and Nigeria signed up to the Kyoto Protocol . Although the Kyoto Protocol had only planned official talks for November 2005, the delegations supported an informal meeting in Bonn in May 2005 to discuss further measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change.
