The UN Climate Change Conference in Montreal was held from November 28 to December 10, 2005 in Montreal instead. It was the eleventh world climate conference. Canadian Environment Minister Stéphane Dion was President of the climate conference .

Results

Almost 10,000 delegates from 189 countries spent two weeks discussing the extension of the Kyoto Protocol and measures against global warming . The climate conference was originally supposed to end on Friday, December 9, 2005. Until recently, however, limit values for greenhouse gas emissions were negotiated. Russia had objected to the procedure and the United States had refused to set limits on principle. Finally, the host country Canada had proposed a compromise that did not set any fixed targets or required concrete measures to reduce emissions. Instead, it was agreed to set up working groups over the next two years to look at ways of reducing emissions in the long term. The international community finally approved the compromise on December 10, 2005. The United States also agreed to the deal, but continued to oppose clear targets. Nevertheless, the environmental protection organization WWF described the conference as a success.
