The UN Climate Change Conference in Geneva took place from July 8-19, 1996 in Geneva , Switzerland . It was the second world climate conference. More than 1,500 participants from 159 countries took part.

Results

The so-called “Geneva Ministerial Declaration” was discussed at the conference, but it was not accepted by the conference. The proposed declaration had called for internationally binding treaties that would define and enforce significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions . Further topics of the conference were the agreement of concrete values of the emission reduction for different states and an acceleration of the talks regarding the Berlin mandate for the agreement of fixed reduction targets at the following climate conference. One important change had occurred in the United States' position during the discussions when it first advocated a binding treaty to meet the demands of the Berlin mandate. Federal Environment Minister Angela Merkel had also called for a ministerial declaration as a “political signal” in order to advance climate protection . 15 industrialized countries had previously declared that they would not be able to achieve the reduction target. The Geneva climate summit ended without any notable results.
