Vladimir Alexandrovich Kistjakowski

Vladimir Alexandrowitsch Kistjakowski , Russian Владимир Александрович Кистяковский , (born October 12, 1865 in Kiev , † October 19, 1952 in Moscow ) was a Russian chemist ( physical chemistry ).

He was the son of a law professor and studied chemistry in Kiev, Saint Petersburg and Leipzig (with Wilhelm Ostwald ). In 1888 he received his doctorate in Saint Petersburg and in 1896 became a private lecturer at the State University of Saint Petersburg. In 1903 he became a professor at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic and from 1930 he was head of the colloid chemistry laboratory at the Metallurgical Institute in Leningrad. In 1934 he was at the Institute for Colloid Chemistry and Electrochemistry in Moscow.

Kistjakowski dealt with electrochemistry and physical chemistry. In 1910 he set up a table of electrode potentials. The Kistjakowski rule about the relationship between the capillary rise and the relative molecular weight of liquids and the Kistjakowski formula about the relationship between the boiling temperature and the heat of vaporization in liquids are named after him. He dealt with colloid chemistry, ion hydration (independently of Iwan Alexejewitsch Kablukow ) and with the theory of metal corrosion. He invented a process for the production of oxide layers for corrosion protection (called box oxidation).

In 1929 he became a member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.
