Joke Waller-Hunter

Joke Waller-Hunter (born November 15, 1946 in Haarlem , † October 14, 2005 in Lohmar ) was a Dutch politician and worked for international organizations in the areas of environmental and climate protection.

biography

When she joined the administration of the Dutch province of North Holland in 1973, she began her career in the field of environmental administration. There she worked as an officer for environmental information and coordinator for environmental planning. From 1984-1994 she worked for the Dutch Ministry of Construction, Spatial Planning and the Environment. There she acted as deputy director for international environmental affairs. In this position she was actively involved in the preparations for the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. From 1992 to 1994 she was director of strategic planning and was responsible for drawing up the second national plan for Dutch environmental policy.

In 1994, Waller-Hunter was appointed first director of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development , an office she held until 1998. From 1998 to 2002 she was Director of the Environment Department at the OECD in Paris . She then moved to the Secretariat of the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bonn , where she assumed the office of Secretary General on May 1, 2002, which she held until her death in October 2005. During her term of office, the Kyoto Protocol came into force on February 16, 2005.

In September 2005 she received an honorary doctorate from the Free University of Amsterdam for her contribution to society through her outstanding work in the field of sustainable development and global climate protection .
