United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development
The Commission on Sustainable Development ( English Commission on Sustainable Development , CSD ) was until 2013 the most important organ in this field within the UN system's. It was a platform for specialist knowledge and a driving force for sustainable development . It was based in New York. In 2013 it was replaced by the High-Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development .
founding
The CSD was founded in 1992 following the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro by resolution A / RES / 47/191 of the UN General Assembly .
tasks
The CSD had the task of following the progress of the goals set in the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development (1992) and Agenda 21 . Later, the CSD was given the task to fulfill the Johannesburg Action Plan (Engl. Plan of Implementation ; 2002) to lead at international, national, regional and local level. In addition, the commission carried out a large number of innovative activities (Partnerships Fair, Learning Center, Roundtables, etc.). Another aim of the CSD was to promote the dialogue between ministries and the so-called major groups (UN-defined associations of important interest groups and NGOs for nine important subject areas, e.g. women, trade unions and indigenous peoples).
Structure and organization
The commission was a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It consisted of 53 representatives from the Member States. A third of the members were newly elected each year. One session of the commission lasted two years. Topics were discussed during the annual meetings. A topic complex comprised several interdisciplinary focal topics.
Detachment
In June 2012 the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio + 20) took place. The insufficiency of the existing structures was determined by mutual agreement and it was decided to replace the CSD with the High-Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development founded in 2013 .
