Bartholomeus Corneliszoon van Bassen (* around 1590; † 1652 in The Hague ) was a Dutch architect and painter of the Baroque era and an important representative of the Dutch Golden Age . He gained notoriety in particular as the city architect of The Hague and builder of the palace of Frederick V of the Palatinate in Rhenen .

Family and personal life

Only the dates of his birth and death are known; Little is known about his family, personal life and education either. It is possible that he was born and trained in Delft, where he joined the Guild of Luke in 1613 ; his earliest work is dated 1614. In 1622 he became a member of the painters' guild in The Hague, so he had to have moved to the royal seat. His grandfather, Bartolt Ernst van Bassen, was a clerk at The Hague Hof van Holland (the oldest upper court, which was exclusively made up of learned lawyers), which may have led him to move. In 1624 van Bassen married Aaltgen Pietersdr van Gilst . The couple had a son, Aernoudt Ernst , whose life and occupation have not been passed on except for the fact that he was married to the daughter of Cornelis van Poelenburch (1594 / 95–1667).

Van Bassen died shortly after the death of his wife in 1652 and was buried in St. Jacob's Church in The Hague.

Gerrit Houckgeest (1600–1661) is the only painter who is said to have been a pupil of van Bassen.

Builder and Architect

From 1629 to 1634 Van Bassen was busy with the private buildings of the governor Frederick Hendrick on Honselaarsdijk and the Ter Nieuburch Castle near The Hague. From 1630 to 1631 he worked as a leading architect at the palace of the “Winter King” Frederick V of the Palatinate in Rhenen .

In 1638 he was promoted to master builder in The Hague and in 1639 to city builder, a position he held until 1650.

Among other things, he built 20 bridges over newly dug canals; the best known was the Bosbrug . Together with Pieter Adriaansz Noorwits , he designed the Nieuwe Kerk , the first church in The Hague specially designed for Protestants, which was built between 1649 and 1656. Van Bassen also designed and realized various Hofjes , in 1645 for example the Hof van Wouw on the Lange Beestenmarkt with its two magnificent corner houses. The design of the court garden ( Tuin der Hesperiden ) should also come from him. His last major construction project was the Boterhuis ( butter house ) on the Prinsegracht.

Painter

Van Bassen was also a talented painter who was successful during his lifetime and who mainly focused on architectural perspectives and interior views of churches.
