Bartholomew Ball

Bartholomew Ball († 1573 ) was an Irish merchant and mayor of Dublin .

Bartholomew Ball was the son of Thomas Ball and his wife Margaret Birmingham . In 1530 he married the sixteen year old Margaret Bermingham . The marriage resulted in ten children, but only five of them reached adulthood.

Ball was a respected merchant and councilor in Dublin. From 1541 to 1542 he held the office of sheriff . He also held the office of Keeper of Keys of the Treasury . Ball was Mayor of Dublin from 1541 to 1542. At that time this was still possible for a Catholic . This should change after Elizabeth I ascended the throne . Both Bartholomew Ball and his wife were steadfast followers of the Catholic faith who were also actively religious.

Ball died in 1573. He was buried in the cemetery of St. Auden's Church in Dublin. In 1584 his wife was also buried there.

His sons Walter and Nicholas later also became mayors of Dublin.
