Bartholomew Green (printer, 1699)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bartholomew Green Jr. (* 1699 - October 29, 1751 in Halifax) was the son of the father of the same name and Bartholomew Green , born in 1666 , the printer of the newspaper The Boston News-Letter .

Green married Hannah Hammond on November 19, 1724, with whom he had five children. He apprenticed to his father until he went his own way in 1725. Almost immediately after leaving his parents' company, he began to print the Boston Gazette , which thus became a competitor for the father's The Boston News Letter . He continued printing this newspaper until 1732. He worked with the company of John Bushell, Allen, and Green, who made high quality prints, which gave him a solid reputation.

When he became a member of a commission set up by the British Army in 1744, this seems to have affected his business, so that he moved to Halifax in 1751 , where he boarded the ship Endeavor in September to open a printing business. This business was the first of its kind in what is now Canada. However, Green died before newspaper production could begin. One of his partners, John Bushell , then began editing, just as Green had planned. He called the newspaper the Halifax Gazette .

Green died in Halifax and it appears that his two sons, who were also printers, were never involved in the running of the newspaper. Green's daughter Mary was the mother of the eminent American journalist and author Joseph Dennie .
