Bartolomeo Columbus

Bartolomé Colón (also: Bartolomeo Columbus ; * around 1461 in Genoa ; † 1515 ) was a cosmographer and navigator. He was a younger brother of Christopher Columbus , who named the island of Saint-Barthélemy, discovered in 1493, after him.

Bartolomé was born in Genoa around 1461 ; from around 1480 he lived with his brother Christopher Columbus in Lisbon , where he worked as a nautical chart maker. He accompanied Christopher Columbus on his second voyage, where he made him provincial governor in La Isabela . In 1498 Bartolomeo founded the settlement of Santo Domingo , now the capital of the Dominican Republic, in the south of the island of Hispaniola at the behest of his brother . The settlers there, led by Francisco Roldán, were soon dissatisfied with his rule and rebelled against him, resulting in chaotic conditions. In addition, Indians were used as slaves in the gold mines discovered by Bartolomé on the island. The Spanish government then felt compelled to have the situation investigated and, until the incidents were resolved, to dismiss the Columbus brothers from their posts and to install Francisco de Bobadilla as the new governor in their place . He had the three brothers Bartolomé, Diego and Christopher Columbus put in chains and sent back to Spain in 1500, where they were promised justice and the retention of their titles.
