Scientific name
Gallirallus insignis
( PL Sclater , 1880)

The bearded rail ( Gallirallus insignis ) is a flightless or almost flightless forest railing on the island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea .

description

The tail of the large rail is not externally recognizable and the wing feathers are soft and receded, which is why it is almost certainly flightless. Still, Coultas, who caught one of the museum specimens, believed the species could fly.

Frequency and distribution

By 1933, the rail was common in very damp forests, both in the lowlands and in mountain valleys. The bird could also be seen in gardens, where it was believed to be looking for snails. The bearded rail was trapped and eaten by the locals. It was common across the island of New Britain.

Meanwhile, the rail has also become rare in its preferred habitats, the rainforests in the lowlands of the island and its mountains up to a height of 1250 m. It is even rarer in less suitable habitats such as high secondary forests. Occasionally it is caught by poaching dogs and at lower altitudes its habitat is threatened by deforestation.

relationship

The Zebra Ralle ( Gallirallus torquatus ), the Okinawa Rail ( Gallirallus okinawae ), the beard Ralle ( Gallirallus insignis ) and the Calayan Rail ( Gallirallus calayanensis ) form a closely related subgroup of the genus Gallirallus .
