Barzan ( Kurdish بارزان Barzan ) is a village in the autonomous region of Kurdistan in Iraq . It belongs to the Erbil governorate and is located about 20 km from the Turkish border on the Great Zab at an altitude of about 700 m. The place belongs to the Mergasor district. Most of the town's inhabitants are Kurds . Barzan is the hometown and namesake of the Barzani tribe , who hold a leading position among the Kurds of Iraq. Barzan has been the target of attacks by the Iraqi government on several occasions during the fighting against the Kurds. In 1961 the air force attacked the area and destroyed several villages. In 1983, the Iraqi regime deported and killed 8,000 members of the Barzani tribe from the Barzan region.
