Bastiaan 'Bas' Heymans (* 21st March 1960 in Veldhoven ) is a Dutch Disney - comic draftsman.

biography

Bastiaan Heymans was born on March 21, 1960 in the Dutch city of Veldhoven . His father, who later worked for an advertising agency, was already a draftsman. His inclination to travel and the lack of vitamins in the young Bas prompted the family to move south to Corsica , where Bas spent two years of his childhood. Since Heymans had already decided to become a draftsman when he was a child, he moved to Montpellier after he had finished school and attended the "Académie des Beaux Arts" there. Since the lessons there taught other techniques in addition to drawing in which he was less interested, he broke off his studies and taught himself the other tools of the draftsman.

In Amsterdam he and his brother Mau Heymans drew together on some underground comixes . But Bas Heymans didn't want to draw comics as long as he was only allowed to take over individual production steps. In addition to his work as a commercial artist, he still took on the ink of some comics, especially those of his brother, as a sideline. In this way he finally managed to become a Disney illustrator.

Even as a Disney draftsman, Heymans remains true to his maxim of taking over all the work steps and therefore inked almost all the comics himself. Donald Duck claims to be his favorite character because he can identify with her the most. In addition to his work as a Disney illustrator, Heymans also worked for a long time for the KNVB , of whose football mascot Dutchy he produced some comic stories.

His son Pasqua Heymans has been writing Disney stories for him since 2013.

Regarding drawing as his passion, he said, “ I'm actually not very ambitious. It is important for me to start each day in the morning and finish well. You should live well and do what you want and can. For me, that's drawing. A day without drawing is practically a wasted day. "

style

Stylistically, the Heymans brothers are very similar and hardly distinguishable to the untrained eye. Significant for both is the proportions of the ducks with long necks and beaks, which are vaguely reminiscent of the ducks of the early bark . Furthermore, it is often Donald's very messy hair and the hat that sits on the side and the large eyes that take up a particularly wide space on the face.
