Basal body

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The basal body is the space in the cytoplasm that is still completely filled by the scourge of a protozoan (e.g. Euglena) and serves as the exit point for this. It serves as the anchorage point for a cilie or flagellum.

The basal body is built like a eukaryotic centriole and functions as an MTOC ( microtubule organizing center ). Therefore, together with axonemalem dynein, it is responsible for the flagellum / ciliate attack.
