Basel-Stadt an exhibition space

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basel-Stadt an exhibition space was an open-air exhibition in Basel ( Switzerland ) by Kurt Meier in 1990 . It was the first art campaign that made it clear to give the works of art a place outside the established institutions and at the same time to oppose them to current advertising . Hundreds, thousands, would see the pictures. Ten years later this opportunity to use Basel as an exhibition space was taken up by Klaus Littmann, with Skultur Basel in 2000. More followed: 2001 Frontside Basel , 2003 Strassenbilder Basel , 2008 Citysky Basel and 2018 Jardin des Planetes Basel .

Project planning

On July 12, 1990, the weekday edition of the National Zeitung in Basel informed its readership with the article "Personally Kurt Meier" about Kurt Meier's planned art campaign. This article was written after an interview with Annemarie Monteil .

Project

From July 16 to July 31, 1990, the large billboards of almost 3 × 4 m with works of art by the Basel artist Kurt Meier on the subject of the rights of people and nature were on display at 13 different locations in and around Basel. This extraordinary art exhibition became a media event in Basel. Smaller posters of 70 × 100 cm, which informed the locations of the works and the duration of the exhibition, were placed in separate locations. Companies and many people interested in art contributed to the financing of the project. Since the pictures were destroyed after the posting was completed, the project is documented photographically in a catalog.

Billboard

The large billboards consisted of four metal panels in portrait format, on which the printed pieces of paper were attached with glue. At the locations there was a fixed metal frame into which the four panels were hung. According to the general poster company APG SGA , this format no longer exists today. The printing works printed four or six pieces of paper in order to achieve the final format. For the sake of simplicity, Kurt Meier had drawn on nine pieces of paper. After the notice was finished, the individual boards were hung up and cleaned with a high-pressure cleaner in the general poster company workshop . For Kurt Meier, this cleaning, the destruction of his works of art, was part of his subject.
