Annemarie Monteil

Annemarie Monteil (* 20th December 1925 in Solothurn , † 3. September 2018 in Basel ) was a Swiss ical art critic and art writer.

life and work

Annemarie Monteil-Schöpfer graduated from Solothurn and studied in 1948 at the “ Sorbonne ” and the “ École du Louvre ” in Paris. From 1947 to 1973 she was married to the Solothurn doctor René Monteil (1920–2011), the couple had two daughters. Since 1955 she wrote commentaries and essays on the fine arts. From 1970 she worked as a full-time art critic for all major newspapers in Switzerland, including the Basler Zeitung , the Tages-Anzeiger in Zurich and the Schweizer Monatshefte . Since 1975 she lived in Basel. She has worked as a freelancer for the Basel Swiss radio and television regional editorial team since the 1980s. From 1980 to 1987 she was a member of the “ Pro Helvetia ” foundation board , and in 1982 she received the culture award of the Canton of Solothurn. Her partner was the architect Hans Luder , with whom she lived in a house on the Bruderholz .

They had a long friendship with the composer Paul Sacher and his wife Maja Sacher , as well as with the gallery owner and museum founder Ernst Beyeler . For Beyeler, Monteil wrote the gallery's "hall texts" for a long time. She has been called the grande dame of Swiss art criticism .

Monteil was the author of numerous publications on Swiss art. She was a member of the Association Internationale des Critiques d'Art (AICA), Section Switzerland. In 2012 she was honored with the AICA Prize for outstanding contributions to art criticism.
