Basile de Glemona

Basile de Glemona (Basile Brollo, * 1648 in Gemona , † 1704) was a missionary of the Minorite Order in China . The Shaanxi region was the focus of his missionary work .

The moderate cleric, charged with an apostolic mission in the Chinese Empire, acquired great skills in the field of Chinese language and writing . In the interest of his confreres, who spread the Christian faith in China, he compiled a Latin-Chinese dictionary with the title: "Han-Yise Si-Yi - Western (European) Declaration of Chinese Characters". This dictionary then spread through copies in Asia because of its practical and well-crafted structure.

It finally appeared in Paris in 1813 under the name Louis-Joseph de Guignes . De Guignes did not include the original author in the title, although his contribution was limited to a rearrangement of the order and frequent transcription errors; instead of the original arrangement according to tones , he set the order according to the 214 radicals . Even Klaproth and Abel Rémusat raised their voices for watching Father Basile 'de Glemona. To this day, his dictionary is an important research tool. A fourth edition in a more manageable format has already been released in China, but it still lacks the real author's name.
