Basil Germann

Basilius Germann OSB , bourgeois Franz Rudolf Germann ; (* October 21, 1727 in Lichtensteig ; † January 24, 1794 in Rheinau ) was a Swiss Benedictine .

Basilius Germann was the son of the Obervogts von Iberg in Toggenburg , Franz Rudolph Germann. After attending the school in Neu St. Johann , he completed a philosophy and theology degree in Freiburg in the Üechtland . Germann took his religious vows in Rheinau monastery in 1747 and was ordained priest in 1751 . In 1760 he was elected subprior . In addition to other monastic offices, Basilius Germann held that of librarian and archivist for over three decades. In this role he wrote the two-volume catalog Catalogus synoptico-criticus manuscriptorum membranaceorum of the monastery manuscripts. Both the catalog and some of the manuscripts it contains are kept in the Zurich Central Library. In commenting on and determining the age of the codes , he showed excellent erudition and critical judgment.
