Basil the Blessed
Basil the Blessed ( Russian Василий Блаженный ; * in December 1468 in Jelochowo near Moscow ; † 1552 or 1557; also: Narr Vasilij , Wassili ) is a Russian saint (festival: August 2nd).
Icons depicting St. Basil are widespread in Russia, especially in Moscow, where St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square was dedicated in his honor .
Basil is one of the group of ascetics known as the " fool in Christ ". In the West, these fools who pretended to be insane were rejected by the Church. In Russia, however, as in Byzantium, they were respected for their actions, with which they denounced grievances in church and society.
On the icons, Basil is often depicted alone, turning to God in prayer. Sometimes he is confronted with another saint.
