The Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge is a nature reserve located in the northwest of the US state of Oregon . The reserve is located within agricultural land in the Willamette Valley and is characterized by a mild climate with high rainfall. It was placed under protection because with its extensive marshes, swamps and meandering watercourses, it offers birds an ideal wintering area. The approximately 11 square kilometers large reserve was established in 1965 and is now looked after by the US Fish and Wildlife Service . A number of species of geese spend the winter here, including the white-fronted goose and the Canada goose . A census in 2001 found 35,988 swans, geese and ducks here.
