history

The main building of today's paper museum was originally a grain mill that belonged to the Klingental monastery until 1428 . In 1453 it was converted into a paper mill by Anton Gallizian . The era of the Gallizian family of paper printers ended in 1521 as a result of a political upheaval. The mill was then expanded mainly by the Thuringian family (Düring). In 1778 the bookseller and publisher Johann Christoph Imhof-Burckhardt took over the mill. In 1788, he replaced the manufacturing section on the canal with a two-story building with a three-story roof structure . In 1850 the tobacco factory of the Hugo brothers moved into the building. It served as a storage room from 1957 until the building was restored and the museum was set up in 1980.

In 2011 the buildings were extensively renovated and the museum expanded. The exhibition has been completely revised and structured more clearly.

Today the main building (Gallizian mill) houses the actual museum with all workshops and an event room. A café and the entrance ticket office are housed in the neighboring stegreif mill. The Rych Mill, south of the Gallizian Mill, is home to the shop and the museum workshops. A Fourdrinier paper machine from 1964 can also be viewed there.
