The Basel Christmas Market is a Christmas event that is held annually in Basel from the end of November to December 23rd .
history
The Basel Christmas market took place on Claraplatz for the first time in 1978, when it was organized by private organizers. In 1979 the city of Basel organized the market for the first time. In the same year, Barfüsserplatz was added to Claraplatz as a site. In the 1990s, only Barfüsserplatz was used as an event location. From 2007 to 2010 the Theaterplatz still belonged to the site, this was replaced by the Münsterplatz in 2011 . The number of stands varied greatly from 1978 to 2019; from 1978 with 35 to 2017 with 181 stands. A survey of 250,000 people was carried out in 2019, and this poll resulted in the market finishing in 6th place in the “Best Christmas Markets in Europe 2020” ranking.
