Josef Haekel

Josef Haekel (born June 17, 1907 in Vienna ; † November 2, 1973 there ) was an Austrian ethnologist .

Life

He studied ethnology from 1931 ( Dr. phil. 1935), then worked at the institute as a research assistant and in 1940 became a research assistant . After his habilitation (1941), Haekel became associate professor in 1950 and full professor and head of the institute in 1957 . In 1961 he went on an expedition to central India. He was a specialist in comparative religion and a specialist in North American Indian tribes.
