The Bastert works were a German manufacturer of sewing machines , small motorcycles and bicycles in Bielefeld .

history

At the age of 25, Gustav Bastert founded a bicycle and sewing machine shop in Bielefeld in 1914 . In 1918 a small-scale production followed; he mainly made cash registers . In 1934 a spacious company building was inaugurated in Heepen . It was there that the manufacture of the then very popular motorcycles began. In contrast to other manufacturers, Bastert did not use the 98 cm³ engine from Fichtel & Sachs , but an ILO engine . Ten different models from 60 cm³ to 118 cm³ were produced by the beginning of the war. Armaments were worked on during the war.

Company founder Gustav Bastert died in 1943, his son Helmut Bastert continued to manage the company.

As early as 1948 it was possible to manufacture a motorbike again, the "Bastert B / FM 100" with the proven ILO motor. In 1949, a 98 Sachs engine was installed in the “B / FS 100” model for the first time. With Kickstarter in 1949 there were two motorcycles with ILO engines, "FM 100 K" and "FM 120 K".

The product range was further expanded, with 150 cm³ engines from Fichtel & Sachs, 175 and 200 cm engines from ILO; Rear suspension and telescopic fork were introduced.

In 1951 Bastert presented the "Bastert single-track car" at the 1st International Bicycle and Motorcycle Exhibition (IFMA) in Frankfurt am Main. It was a 2.25 m long touring scooter reminiscent of the Maicomobil , which was powered by a 175 cm³ or optionally a 200 cm³ ILO engine. 600,000 DM development costs drove the sales price up (1,960.00 and 2,060.00 DM), so that the Bastert scooter was the most expensive of its time. The handcrafted vehicle was of high quality and comfortable: It had a streamlined light metal body with enamel paintwork, as well as telescopic fork, rear-wheel telescopic suspension and quick-release axles that made changing wheels easier.

With only around 1200 "single-track cars" sold, the expected success failed to materialize, and so the settlement proceedings were opened on November 1, 1953, which averted bankruptcy. In 1955 the production of motorcycles ended, in 1956 the last two-wheelers were made.

Until the bankruptcy in 1987, Bastert-Werke produced plastic packaging.
