Grolman Bastion

The Grolman Bastion is located in the Russian city of Kaliningrad , the former Koenigsberg . It is near Alexander-Newski-Strasse (Cranzer Allee) in the direction of Moskovsky Prospect , opposite the Kronprinz defense barracks .

history

The bastion was built from 1856 to 1860 and named after the Prussian army reformer Karl von Grolman . The horseshoe-shaped reduit was part of the fortification buildings in the 19th century that were built in the Königsberger Peripetie . The architects remained unknown. In April 1945 the 367th Infantry Division had its last command post there. On April 10, the bastion was surrounded by the Red Army; the defenders and the division commander Lieutenant General Hermann Hähnle were taken prisoner by the Soviets. In the post-war period, the building was used as storage or workshop space for small businesses. The establishment of a hotel is currently being planned.
