The Batanga are a Bantu people with around 6000 members (as of 1982) and live on the Atlantic coast of Cameroon .

history

The name Batanga goes back to the clan chief Ntanga, under whose leadership the Batanga split off from the Duala people . They moved south along the Atlantic coast and settled around what is now Kribi .

Martin-Paul Samba

In October 1887 the region around Kribi was taken by the Germans. The chief Madola from the village of Groß-Batanga took part in the planning of an uprising against colonial rule in 1914 under the leadership of the former sergeant of the imperial protection force Martin-Paul Samba . However, the plan was betrayed and Madola was shot along with other insurgents. In the course of the First World War , some Bantanga fled their settlement areas in 1914. They returned to their homeland in 1916.

The current chief of the Batanga of Mboamanga (Kribi) is Michel Mahouve, who also plays a role in international politics. In 2002 he sat for Cameroon in the international Rwanda tribunal . In 2006 he was a member of the United Nations Human Rights Commission.

geography

Kribi, which was founded by the Germans during the colonial era, now has around 60,000 (2007) inhabitants. The lighthouse and the renovated church date from colonial times. The port of Kribi is becoming less and less important.

Culture

The Batanga live mainly from fishing .

They speak the Batanga , which belongs to the Bube Benga group of the Bantu languages.

Every year the Batanga celebrate the return of the war refugees from 1916 in two batches: on February 14th and May 9th. The latter is celebrated with a procession by Kribi and several festivities.
