The Hauteseille Monastery (Alta Silva; German: Hohenforst) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Cirey-sur-Vezouze in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department , Grand Est region , 27 km northeast of Baccarat , France.

history

In 1140 the Countess von Salm Agnes von Langstein founded the abbey as a subsidiary of Kloster Theuley from the filiation of the primary abbey Morimond . The church was consecrated in 1176 by the Bishop of Toul . In the wars of the 15th and 17th centuries, the monastery was badly affected. The baroque abbey buildings were built in 1737 by A. Malbert. The remains of the monastery that remained after a looting in 1789 were sold in 1791. The complex has been on the list of historical monuments since 1927 .

Buildings and plant

Part of the west facade of the three-aisled church with five nave and 10 aisle bays (see illustration), which had a three-sided choir closure and a transept, with a Romanesque portal flanked on both sides by two blind arches without a tympanum, has been preserved and windows as well as two oculi on the upper floor. The facade has been described by G. Durand (in Églises romanes des Vosges, 1913) as "the most elaborately decorated that there is on Lorraine soil". A baroque gatehouse and a farm yard used as an agricultural property have also been preserved.
