Peter Volkelt

Peter Johannes Volkelt (born June 26, 1914 in Jena ; † January 21, 2002 in Ebersdorf near Coburg ) was a German art historian .

Life

Peter Volkelt was born as the son of the pedagogue Hans Volkelt , in turn the son of the philosopher Johannes Volkelt , and his wife Gertrud Volkelt, daughter of the chemist Arthur Hantzsch . He studied at the Steyber School and from 1925 to 1934 the Thomasschule in Leipzig . Until 1940 he studied art history , archeology and folklore at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin. From 1941 to 1945 he served as a soldier in the Wehrmacht and was briefly captured by the Soviets .

For political reasons he went to the American zone of occupation and from 1947 worked in the photo archive of Photo Marburg . In 1948 he became an employee at the Philipps University of Marburg . In 1949 he obtained his doctorate as Dr. phil. His professors included Theodor Hetzer , Hermann Beenken , Johannes Jahn , Wilhelm Pinder , Richard Hamann and Richard Hamann-Mac Lean . On the recommendation of Josef Adolf Schmoll called Eisenwerth , he became an assistant at the Saarland University in 1951 . In 1957 he became curator . He completed his habilitation in 1966 and became chief curator in 1969. In 1971 he became an adjunct professor . From 1977 to 1980 he was chairman of the historical association for the Saar region .
