The Bathgate High Church , also Bathgate High Kirk , is a church building of the Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Bathgate in the Council Area West Lothian . In 1996 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Monument Category B.

history

It is at least the second church building at this location. A previous structure from 1737 was abandoned in 1882. The Scottish architects Wardrop and Reid are responsible for the design of Bathgate High Church . During the construction period, the parish used a nearby market hall for grain. The building was completed in 1884 after two years of construction. The total cost was around £ 8,000.

description

The structure is located at the intersection of Main Street and Gideon Street east of the city center. It is essentially designed in the neo-Romanesque style, but also has neo-Gothic details. The entrance area of the sandstone building, designed as a round arch portal, is located on the bell tower on the southwest side. The top section of the three-story tower is provided with round-arched twin windows on all sides . The buttresses on the tower edges close with pinnacles that protrude over the flat roof. A crenellated parapet connects them. The six-axis long nave is designed with arched windows and pinnacles. It closes with a semicircular apse with arched windows. The roofs are covered with gray slate.

The oldest gravestones in the associated cemetery date from the time of the previous building and begin around 1740. They are often lavishly designed, some with obelisk or monumental.
