The Bathymyrinae are a subfamily of conger eels (Congridae), which includes seven genera and 45 species . Species of the subfamily live in all oceans.

features

Bathymyrinae are 15 to just over 60 cm long. The preanal length (length in front of the anal fin) always makes up more than 40% of the total length. The pectoral fins are well developed. The caudal fin is reduced, the tip of the tail stiff. The rays of the dorsal and anal fin are unsegmented. The teeth are small and there is a distinct fold on the upper lip. The posterior nostrils are ventral, below mid-eye level. Exceptions here are the genera Parabathymyrus , where the posterior nostrils are close to the lips , and Kenyaconger , where the posterior nostrils are at the edge of the lips and the lip fold is tubular.

Two groups can be distinguished within the Bathymyrinae. In Ariosoma, Bathymyrus and Parabathymyrus the supraoccipital bone is missing, their urhyale, a tendon ossification in the skull, is furrowed three times. There is no pore in front of the nasal , but there are third and fourth infraorbital pores. Their leptocephalus larvae are laterally pigmented by short, oblique rows of tiny melanophores .

In Chilocongers and Paracongers , on the other hand, the supraoccipital bone is present, the Urohyale is simple, the pore is present in front of the nasal. The third and fourth infraorbital pores are missing. Your leptocephalus larvae are laterally pigmented by a single row of medium-sized melanophores.
