Batson (Texas)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Batson is an unincorporated settlement immediately off State Highway 105 in southwest Hardin Country , Texas .

The settlement was originally founded by the Batson brothers around 1840. They later built a church that also served as a school.

In October 1903 an oil field was discovered north of the city and soon afterwards the population quickly increased and shops, hotels and restaurants opened up. In the 1920s, oil production in Batson Dome Field was cut back, which meant a decrease in the population from around 10,000 to around 600 people. In March 1935, due to another oil field discovery, the population increased slightly again, but over the next few decades the population decreased again. Old maps from 1936 still show two churches, two shops, a school and the post office in the community. From 1950 to 1970 the population fell to around 200 people. In 2000 there were still 140 inhabitants.

Today, the settlement of Batson belongs to the city council of Beaumont, some 30 kilometers away .
