Battery Pomerania in Koekelare

The Pommern battery was a German gun emplacement in the occupied Belgian city of Koekelare during the First World War . It consisted of a modified 38 cm SK L / 45 "Max" cannon in a concrete circular bed. The gun of the Pomeranian battery had a different design compared to the earlier German 38 cm guns. In order to achieve a greater range, the manufacturer Krupp had enlarged the cargo space so that a stronger propellant charge could be fired. With this modification, the range of the cannon was about 50 km and reached as far as Dunkirk .

During the German retreat in 1918, the gun was dismantled and moved to Germany by train. However, the Belgians found the cannon at the Brussels train station and brought it back to the gun emplacement, where it served as a memorial during the interwar period. The gun emplacement itself had not been blown up when the Imperial Army withdrew.

Today the Lange Max Museum is located next to the former Pommern Battery. The gun emplacement is part of the museum.
